A senior researcher at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard, Ethan Zuckerman is an Internet activist and scholar whose work focuses on the global blogosphere, free expression and social translation in the developing world. As the director of the MIT Center for Civic Media, he contributes both to the understanding of the role and power of civic media in the broader media ecosystem, and builds tools that help communities around the world share their perspectives and stories. The Long Haul from Trucker to Journalist/Novelist
Fred Afflerbach, author of "Roll On"
When Fred Afflerbach first took to the long haul in a GMC diesel rig in 1978, he knew that he had uncovered something special, something you can't find on any map. The old-time truckers he met out on the road had been traversing the continent since the 1950s, driving primitive rigs on primitive roads. And as far as he could tell, American literature and cinema had either bypassed or missed the mark; these transcontinental, independent truckers were twentieth century folk heroes. He knew then, that someday he would be the one to tell the story.

In June of 2012, a local sporting event - the Texas Water Safari - included a social media presence. It turned out to be timely. Besides giving families, friends and communities a chance to follow along with the race for the first time, Twitter and Facebook would become an important way for a non-journalist to communicate to the media and journalists when tragedy hit and, for the first time in the 50 years of the marathon, a racer died.

Three bobcat alum speak about life as 20-something entrepreneurs in the field of mass
communications. Each of these previous students has a unique story which brought them to entrepreneurship, and they are here to tell their stories, answer questions, and explain how it is not impossible to take a similar path immediately after college if you'd like. Brett Cannon and Jessie Spielvogel went on to create their own communications companies, and Kristen Williams is using her skills as a Spanish speaker to create textbooks, resources, and her own video series on YouTube to market her Spanish education products online.
