Communication in Music

By: Jacob Joosten

Think of your favorite song. Now try to think of everything that went into getting that song to you.

I can assure you there is a lot more that goes into it than just what initially comes to mind. Not only is someone having to write lyrics and produce the song, but something a lot of people don’t think about is the marketing and public relations logistics of the music business. You may be thinking to yourself, “Wow, that’s pretty interesting. But how am I, an average student, going to learn more about this field that interests me?” Theres no way I can tune in to see three music marketing professionals talk about everything that goes into their work and answer any questions I might have.

Well, you haven’t heard of Mass Comm Week 2020. This year’s installation of the annual Mass Communication event will all be organized through Zoom. And this year one of the most exciting sessions will be a panel of three music business professionals discussing with each other and you the nuances of their day to day and how you can start a career in the music business. The panel will be comprised of Katie Czap, Brandon Blevins, and Carl Schultz.

Katie is a digital strategist and music enthusiast. After graduating from Texas State University, Katie began working in the marketing department for iHeart Media, gaining experience working with some of the world’s top artists like Billie Eilish, Lizzo, and others. After being laid off due to the Covid-19 pandemic Katie began her own freelance marketing and PR business for the Austin music scene. Katie currently works as a marketing consultant for an Austin based PR company. Katie’s true passion for music is found in Indie music. She believes that the best way to help her clients grow is to start at a local level.

Brandon is the lead singer and head of marketing for his band, Blevins. Blevins is comprised of Brandon and his two brothers Kevynn and Dillon who have been making music together since as early as middle school. Blevins plays live shows all over Texas and has songs featured on Spotify and Apple Music with around 700,000 combined plays. Brandon has been handling the marketing side of the band since they first started and has learned important lessons in the music business throughout the years.

Carl Schultz is an accomplished public relations and marketing professional with 20 years experience developing and implementing communication strategies to increase media exposure and support marketing initiatives. Carl is the owner of Action! Media and Marketing and Nom Nom PR. Action! is a boutique music and pop culture publicity and marketing firm that specializes in public relations, artist management, online publicity, and branding.
